"And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” -Acts 20:35 NLT
Philanthropy is common to athletes. Philanthropic efforts include giving back to their communities by helping those who are in need financially, physically, mentally, etc. One thing that we forget sometimes is that some athletes didn’t grow up in wealthy households. Some grew up in single parent households or had parents who faced financial difficulty or were even homeless. Some of them may have suffered with physical challenges or have loved ones who did. In addition, we must remember that they are not superhuman. They are people who have faced difficult circumstances in life just like you and I.
In spite of everything that some athletes have gone through, by the grace of God they are able to use those experiences as motivation to not only enhance their lives but also their family’s lives. After reaching their childhood dream of playing collegiate and/or professional sports, most athletes have remembered their personal experiences and have used those experiences to help others reach their goals and lend a hand to those who are less fortunate.
In 2015, after Hurricane Harvey, J.J. Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans, donated and helped those hurricane victims in Houston. LeBron James, small forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, has been extremely philanthropic throughout his NBA career. He has helped so many by donating through his LeBron James Family Foundation, opening his IPROMISE School for grades 1-8, and he has even helped individuals go to college. Michael Jordan opened the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic to provide healthcare to those who have little to no health insurance.
These are only few great examples of athletes who have used their resources to bless others. Like these athletes, it is so important to understand how blessed we are, whether we have a lot or little. Be content and thankful for what God has done in your life. Give to those who are less fortunate whether if it is through money, food, clothing/shoes, time, support/encouragement, etc. If we see someone who is homeless on the side of the road and you lend money to them, don’t worry about what they do with it. Do the right thing and give. If they use the money for what they are not supposed to do, allow that to be between them and God. Always use discernment and allow God to lead you.
We understand that God just doesn’t bless us for our own gain, but He blesses us to be a blessing in the lives of others.
